Natural is not a fad, it's what has been timeless

FAQs

Here we try to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about personal care products.  For any specific queries, please feel free to connect with us here.

1. What is Sarjan all about?
Sarjan tries to build a better world through small changes. Initially we are focussing on providing natural personal care products that are chemical-free and simple.

2. What is the meaning of natural products?
There are various different definitions that each individual or a company adopts for the term natural. For example, for some it may mean natural resources like water, sunlight, minerals, crude oil, petroleum and natural gas, minerals are all natural. Many naturally occurring flavours like mango flavour, orange flavour, lime etc. are recreated in the laboratory and are termed as nature-identical. Some confuse natural with organic. So each individual thinks of natural in the way they thinks it correct.
We are Sarjan define natural as anything that is found in nature as is, like, honey, flowers, milk, calcium carbonate, turmeric etc. or are nature derived like essential oils (derived from flowers or other plant parts), shea butter, cocoa butter, vegetable oils (derived from vegetables), ghee, aloe vera gel, distilled water etc.

Furthermore, all the natural or nature derived ingredients used at Sarjan are 100% non-toxic and have been used as home remedies for centuries. We do not use any toxins or any known toxic chemicals in any of our products.

For fragrance and colouring, we only use essential oils and colours from plants like coriander, beet root, facial clays, honey etc.

3. What is the harm in using products made using chemicals?
Most of the personal care products in the market are a cocktail of more than 20 ingredients (many of which in turn are processed from multiple other chemical ingredients). We also assume that all of these are approved for use by the respective licensing authorities. However, many of the chemicals used in the personal care products have been identified as endocrine disruptors, carcinogens and a cause of reproductive disorders among others.  Even though the amount of chemicals in the personal care products that we use may be within the prescribed limit, however, continuous use over a long period can make one prone to the toxic side effects of these chemicals sooner or later.

4. What are some of the known carcinogenic ingredients or chemicals in the personal care products that we get in the market?
Some of the known carcinogenic ingredients generally present in the personal care products are:
A. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
B. Diethanolamine (DEA)
C. Phthalates dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), and diethyl phthalate (DEP)
D. Formaldehyde (formaldehyde releasers: bronopol, DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, and quaternium-15)
E. Fragrance (perfume, parfum, essential oil blend, and aroma)
F. PEGs (polyethylene glycol or ceteareth)
G. Parabens (specifically propyl-, isopropyl-, butyl-, and isobutyl- parabens)
H. Sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate
I. Synthetic colors
J. Siloxane (ingredients ending in -siloxane or -methicone)
K. Triclosan

Also, just because you use only imported products, does not mean you are safe from chemical exposure. Even developed countries do not enforce laws as well as they should.

5. How do I know if the products I am currently using has chemicals or is made of natural ingredients?
Simple. Look at the list of ingredients. If you cannot pronounce the name of an ingredient, it is most likely a chemical ingredient. You can check out more about the listed ingredient here

6. What makes Sarjan products better than the ones available in the market?
Sarjan is not a large scale venture, but is born out of the express need of the community. We used to make personal care products for our own use from nature and nature derived ingredients and also gifted a few to our friends. They encouraged us to scale it up so that we can reach out to people who really want better products but lack a viable alternative. There are some alternatives that claim to be all natural but are very very expensive and can thus only cater to a niche segment. We intend to be small and provide products that are simple, natural, real and hand made.

Sarjan does not use any preservatives in any products and no chemical emulsifiers. We make only small batches at a time and so do not need any preservatives. This is what our customers expect from us and we deliver on that. We make everything fresh each day!  We are transparent and put up each ingredient of our products out there for everyone to see. None of our products contains more than seven ingredients and that too, so well known and age old that even your great grandmother can tell you about its uses and efficacy ! Our products are real and since we do not use any chemical emulsifiers, you may see some coconut oil and aloe vera separating (since there is no chemical bonding), but the best part is you just need to shake it up and, voila!, you get back the creamy natural lotion.  Our pricing is based on costing and not profit percentage and that's why it is within reach of everyone.

We can make products that are toxin free by adhering to the principle of simplicity for each of our products.
